Briefly about the organization, Hospital Infection Society- India (HISI)
It is an association of healthcare professionals with a special interest in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HCAI) in India. Established by stalwarts of Neurosurgery, Microbiology, Surgery, Nephrology, Anaesthesia, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Infection Prevention and Control, like Dr. Brahm Prakash, NeuroSurgery;Dr. Bhale Rao, Surgery;Dr. Acharya, Nephrology, Dr. F.D. Dastur, Internal Medicine, Dr. Ajita Mehta, Infection Control Professional; Prof. Geeta Mehta, Microbiology and Infection Control,Dr.T.S. Jain, Pediatrics and registered in 1992 the organization is three decades old in the field, serving the nation and humanity. It is a registered Academic Society incorporated with Registrar of Societies at Delhi and conforms to 12 A of IT Act.
HISI has been invited by Govt. of India and State government and quasi government institutions and authorities, reputed organizations like WHO, as a resource partner in policy and strategy buildup and implementation of protocols in Prevention and Control of Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) especially in healthcare facilities from general practitioner to tertiary care hospital and stand-alone facilities in India
The Society’s (HISI) mission is to provide the necessary tools, information and technical resources to its members and partners to develop infection control programs in their institutions focusing on evidence based medicine. We have twin objectives as an organization viz decreasing the preventable infections to minimum and decreasing the pace of emergence of antimicrobial resistance. For achieving this, we hold CME programs, organize Symposia and other training and awareness programs and seminars, develop guidelines, bring out publications, provide hands on training, and hold conferences in the field of infection prevention and control and infectious disease management with Diagnostic Stewardship and Antimicrobial Stewardship (HISIEPAMS forum under HISI) and Bio Medical Waste Management.
It has a Journal by the name of Journal of Patient Safety and Infection Control (JPSIC), published by Wolters Kluwer and is awaiting Pub Med indexing this year.
HISI is a National Body and has focussed on City Chapters, focussing on cities rather than larger regions ina state. This has helped us in rationalizing our resources and on our approachto fulfill our goals. Presently there are about 1500 members of National and in City Chapters from across the country and a few from abroad, including Microbiologists, Physicians and Surgeons across different specialties including Pediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Critical Care, CTVS, Neurosurgery, General and G.I. Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Pharmacology, Epidemiology etc., Medical hospital administrators, Nursing professionals and other professionals working in health care institutions engaged with the specialty of Infection Prevention and Control. Many of our members are amongst the key opinion leaders for the prevention and control of HCAI and management of Infectious Diseases, in their institutions and find representations in various central or state government committees in AMR and in Infection Prevention and Control and also with organizations like WHO, Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS)
Our National Conference (HISICON) is held every year in different parts of the country. It has been graced by eminent speakers and stalwarts of the time, in the past.
